The official specs at a glance
According to YouTube Help (checked October 18, 2026), custom thumbnails should be "as large as possible," and YouTube recommends:
| Content | Recommended size | Aspect ratio | Minimum |
|---|---|---|---|
| Videos | 3840 x 2160 pixels | 16:9 | 640 pixels wide |
| Shorts | 2160 x 3840 pixels | 9:16 | 640 pixels tall |
| Podcast playlists | Square image | 1:1 | — |
For every type:
- Formats: image files such as JPG or PNG.
- File size: up to 50 MB from a desktop for videos, Shorts and podcasts; from mobile, 2 MB for video thumbnails or 10 MB for podcasts.

Why bigger is better
Your thumbnail is also the preview image in the embedded player, so it can appear on large TVs and desktop screens. An image designed at a small size looks soft when stretched. Designing at 3840 x 2160 means you can export a smaller copy if you ever need to stay under the 2 MB mobile limit, without redesigning.
How to set up your design file
- In Canva or your design tool, create a custom size of 3840 x 2160 pixels.
- Keep important faces and words away from the bottom-right corner, where the video length appears.
- Leave a little breathing room around the edges, since some surfaces crop slightly.
- Export as JPG for photos or PNG for flat graphics with sharp text.
- Check the file size. If you plan to upload from your phone, export a lighter copy.
Shorts and vertical video
Custom Shorts thumbnails can currently be added only in YouTube Studio on a computer, according to the same help page. Use 9:16. YouTube also notes that vertical videos with 16:9 custom thumbnails may show an auto-generated 4:5 thumbnail on the home, explore and subscription pages, so design vertical thumbnails for vertical videos.
Size is only the start
A perfectly sized thumbnail still has to earn the click. For business videos, that means one clear subject, a face showing emotion where it fits, few or no words, and a promise the video keeps. See whether thumbnails need text and YouTube click-through rate for what happens after you upload.
Watch out
Common mistakes
- Using a screenshot from the video at low resolution.
- Designing at 4:3 or square for a standard video, which leaves black bars.
- Exporting a huge PNG photo that's over the limit.
- Forgetting that the thumbnail must follow YouTube's Community Guidelines; violating thumbnails can be removed and lead to a strike.
Quick checklist before you upload
Open the exported file on your phone at full screen, then shrink it to a small preview. It should look sharp in both views, the subject should be obvious, and any words should be readable. If not, fix it in the design file rather than re-exporting at a lower size.
Podcast thumbnails
If you set a playlist as a podcast, YouTube asks for a square image. Design it separately rather than cropping your video thumbnail. For channel naming that matches your thumbnails, see choosing a channel name.

A principle I keep coming back to
"Keep it to the topic that you promised in the title and the thumbnail." (Dave)

Frequently asked questions
Can I use 1280 x 720?
It's above the minimum, so it will upload, but YouTube now recommends 3840 x 2160 for videos. Designing larger keeps the image sharp on big screens.
