YouTube Analytics: The Few Numbers That Matter

By Dave Espino · Last updated

Quick answer

For a business channel, YouTube analytics comes down to a few numbers: impressions click-through rate (do people choose your video?), average view duration (do they stay?), and traffic sources (how do they find you?). Pair those with the number YouTube can't show you, email sign-ups from each video, to see what actually builds your business.

Which YouTube metrics matter most?

Metric What it tells you Where to find it
Impressions click-through rate How often people who saw your thumbnail clicked YouTube Studio, Analytics, Reach
Average view duration How long viewers stayed Analytics, Engagement
Traffic sources Search, suggested, browse, external Analytics, Reach
Returning viewers Whether people come back Analytics, Audience

How do you read click-through rate and view duration together?

Read them as a pair:

  • High click rate, short viewing: the title or thumbnail may promise something the video doesn't deliver.
  • Low click rate, long viewing: a good video in weak packaging. Try a new thumbnail (thumbnails).
  • Both strong: make more like it.

What number does YouTube not show you?

Email sign-ups. Your email service shows them. Use a separate tracking code or sign-up link per video (or per placement) so you can see which videos actually build your list. On this site, each sign-up form sends its own tracking tag for exactly that reason.

A video with modest views that brings in steady sign-ups is worth more to your business than a viral one that brings none. Engaged viewers beat raw views.

What about comments?

Read them. Some of the most useful feedback I've had was critical. After my business partner and I deliberately broadened our channel's topic, a viewer left a pointed comment about it. Instead of getting defensive, we treated it as data: it told us exactly how part of our audience saw the change. Comments are free market research.

A simple monthly review

  1. List your top five videos by views and by average view duration.
  2. Note the main traffic source for each.
  3. Add email sign-ups per video from your email service.
  4. Make one more video like the best performer on sign-ups.

Example

Worked example: a monthly review in 20 minutes

A fitness coach opens YouTube Studio and her email service on the first of each month:

Video Views Avg. % viewed Sign-ups Sign-ups per 1,000 views
"Home workout for beginners" 4,000 38% 20 5
"Why you're not losing weight" 1,200 52% 30 25
"My gym bag essentials" 2,500 30% 2 0.8

(Illustrative numbers.) The video with the fewest views brought the most subscribers per view, because the topic matched her offer and her ideal client. Next month she plans two more videos on that theme and stops making gear videos.

Reading audience retention graphs

  • A steep early drop: the opening doesn't match the title, or takes too long.
  • A gradual slope: normal; people leave over time.
  • A sudden dip mid-video: something lost interest there, such as a tangent or a long setup.
  • A bump: people rewatched or skipped to that part; it's valuable, so consider a video about it.

Watch out

Analytics mistakes

  • Checking daily. Numbers swing; monthly trends are what matter.
  • Comparing Shorts to long videos on the same metrics.
  • Ignoring traffic sources. They tell you whether search, recommendations or external links are working.
  • Never connecting YouTube to your list data. Views without sign-up data hide your best videos.

AI shortcut

How can AI speed this up?

AI tools and plans checked October 18, 2026. They change often, so confirm on each tool's own page. No affiliate links.

  • Ask your data questions. Ask Studio can analyze your channel's performance in plain language, e.g. "Which videos kept viewers longest last quarter?"
  • Combine numbers. Export views from YouTube and sign-ups from your email service, then ask ChatGPT or Claude to calculate sign-ups per 1,000 views per video.
  • Summarize comments. Paste a batch of comments and ask for the recurring questions and complaints.

Tools mentioned:

AI is great for first drafts. Always edit the result so it sounds like you and is accurate for your business.

Key takeaways

  • Read click-through rate and average view duration together.
  • Traffic sources tell you how people find you; double down on what works.
  • The number YouTube can't show you, email sign-ups, matters most.
  • Comments, even critical ones, are free feedback.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good click-through rate on YouTube?

There's no single good number. YouTube says click-through rate varies by video, traffic source and audience. Compare your videos against each other, and read it alongside average view duration.
